Essential Skills Every Medical Assistant Needs /essential-medical-assistant-skills/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 18:21:02 +0000 /?p=44228 If you want a career that plays a key role in today’s healthcare offices, it’s worth considering skills as a medical assistant. Workers in this growing field support doctors, help patients, and keep clinics running smoothly. Medical assistant skills include a mix of abilities used every day on the job, including soft skills and technical skills you can learn through a qualified program. Graduates of a medical assistant program should be able to demonstrate effective patient communication, perform basic clinical procedures, and manage essential administrative tasks in a healthcare setting.

Soft Skills For Interacting With Patients

Working with patients is a big part of a medical assistant’s role. They often greet patients, answer questions, and help them feel comfortable. Strong soft skills are necessary to help create a positive experience.

Communication is one of the most important skills of a medical assistant. Each day, they will:

  • Explain procedures
  • Give instructions
  • Share information clearly
  • Listen to patient concerns and questions

Strong communication and active listening skills are key here. Other important soft skills include empathy and compassion. Many patients feel nervous or unwell during visits. A calm and caring attitude can help reduce stress and build trust.

Other important soft skills a medical assistant should have include:

  • Patience when working with people of all ages
  • Professionalism in sensitive situations
  • Attention to detail when sharing information
  • Discretion and understanding of patient privacy laws
  • Teamwork with doctors, nurses, and office staff
  • Medical assistants must also use critical thinking and adaptability to respond to changing schedules, patient needs, and clinical priorities throughout the day.

Technical Skills Of A Medical Assistant

Along with people skills, medical assistants need technical knowledge. These skills help them handle both clinical and administrative tasks that are a big part of daily work in a medical office.

Some of the technical skills a medical assistant should learn include:

  • Monitoring blood pressure and pulse
  • Taking a patient’s temperature
  • Preparing patients for exams
  • Proper safety and hygiene practices
  • Preparing exam rooms

In addition, administrative tasks are also common. Skills as a medical assistant in this area may include:

  • Scheduling appointments
  • Updating patient records
  • Handling billing or insurance forms
  • Using electronic health record systems

Overall, a medical assistant’s skills should be well-rounded. They require accuracy and focus, as well as organization.

A Medical Assistant Career Could Be For You

A career as a medical assistant is a good fit for many people, whether they are just starting out in their career or whether they’re considering something new. It’s a great option for people who enjoy helping others and working in a fast-paced setting. It’s also a good career fit for people who enjoy versatility in their workday. If you’ve struggled with past office jobs where every day looks the same, medical assisting can be a great career pivot.

If you’re still not sure if a medical assistant career is right for you, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  1. Do you enjoy working with people face-to-face?
  2. Do you enjoy learning new skills?
  3. Are you willing to be part of a healthcare team that requires strong communication and camaraderie?
  4. Do you feel comfortable spending a lot of your day on your feet?
  5. Are you interested in a role with both clinical and office duties?
  6. Do you feel comfortable around (or least tolerant of) things like needles and bodily fluids?
  7. Do you have a desire to learn something new or to pivot your career?

If you answered yes to these questions, it may be worth signing up for a medical assistant program where you can learn the skills you’ll need for success.

How You Can Learn These Skills To Become A Medical Assistant

If your answer to these questions is yes, your next step is to research medical assistant programs! A formal training program teaches both soft skills and technical skills a medical assistant will need for the job. Choosing an accredited medical assistant program ensures the curriculum meets institutional and New York State educational standards. Students gain knowledge through classroom lessons and hands-on practice.

Training often covers medical terms, patient care, and office procedures. You will learn how to communicate with patients, work as part of a team, and build confidence. This combination aligns with New York State essential employability skills and helps prepare students for entry-level roles in healthcare settings. Developing strong medical assistant skills takes time and dedication. Top Skills Every Practical Nurse Should Possess /top-skills-every-practical-nurse-should-possess/ Mon, 15 Dec 2025 18:22:32 +0000 /?p=44214 Starting a career in healthcare can be exciting and rewarding. For those interested in becoming a practical nurse, having the right skills is your key to success. Licensed practical nurse skills combine medical knowledge, patient care, and personal qualities that help nurses thrive in this important role. Let’s take a look at what these skills are and how you can learn them or improve at them to start working as an LPN.

Core Clinical Nursing Skills Every LPN Needs

Practical nurses provide hands-on care to patients every day. To do this well, they need a strong set of clinical skills. These abilities help them deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care in many different settings. These clinical skills include:

  • Patient care and assessment
  • Medical equipment knowledge

Patient Care and Assessment

One of the most important LPN skills is patient care. Practical nurses help with things like medication administration and wound care, within their scope of practice and under the direction of a registered nurse or other authorized provider. In addition to helping patients with dressing, eating, and other daily routines, LPNs may also take vital signs like blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate.

Observation is another key part of patient care. A practical nurse must watch closely for changes in a patient’s condition. Reporting these changes to doctors or registered nurses ensures patients get the right treatment quickly.

Medical Equipment Knowledge

Practical nurses often use medical tools and equipment. Knowing how to use these correctly is an important part of LPN skills and abilities.

For example, an LPN may:

  • Operate blood pressure cuffs and thermometers
  • Use IV poles or oxygen equipment (as permitted by facility policy and New York State scope-of-practice guidelines)
  • Change dressings with sterile supplies
  • Keep equipment clean and ready for use

Good equipment knowledge helps a practical nurse keep patients safe while supporting doctors and registered nurses in their work.

Essential Soft Skills for Practical Nurses

While clinical knowledge is vital, soft skills are just as important. These personal qualities help an LPN connect with patients and work well on a team.

Strong communication skills are at the top of the list. Practical nurses need to explain care instructions clearly to patients and families. They also must listen carefully to patients’ concerns and share important details with the healthcare team.

Compassion and empathy are equally important. Patients may feel nervous, sick, or in pain. An LPN who shows kindness can make a big difference in a patient’s comfort and trust.

Other soft skills that help practical nurses succeed include:

  • Patience when caring for those who need extra time or support
  • Adaptability when schedules or patient needs change quickly
  • Teamwork to support doctors, RNs, and fellow LPNs
  • Time management to handle several tasks during a busy shift

These soft skills allow practical nurses to balance the technical side of care with the human side of nursing.

How to Develop and Strengthen Your Nursing Skills

No one is born with every skill needed to be a great nurse. Instead, these skills grow over time through learning and practice. Through formal education, certification, and on-the-job training, you can harness your LPN skills for good and become better at this work every day.

Formal Education and Certification

The first step toward building strong LPN skills is formal education. A practical nursing program teaches the basics of patient care, anatomy, medical terms, and more. Students also learn safety procedures and how to use medical equipment. 1

Completing a program prepares students to take the NCLEX-PN exam. Passing this exam, along with meeting all New York State Education Department licensure requirements, is required to become licensed and begin working as a practical nurse.

On-the-Job Training

Education is only the beginning. Once licensed, practical nurses gain new abilities by working directly with patients. Each day brings new situations to learn from, whether it’s caring for a new type of patient or working with different healthcare professionals.

On-the-job training also helps nurses grow in confidence. Over time, they become more comfortable making decisions, solving problems, and handling emergencies. Many LPNs also receive mentoring and supervision from experienced nurses, which helps them develop their own style of patient care.

Building Your LPN Career Through Skill Development

Success in nursing doesn’t stop with the first job. Practical nurses who continue to grow their skills often find more opportunities for career advancement.

Every practical nurse has a unique journey, but the path to success often includes continuous learning. Many LPNs attend workshops, take short courses, or earn specialized certifications in areas like IV therapy or gerontology.

Developing new abilities can open doors to leadership roles, higher pay, or jobs in specialized healthcare settings. Even small improvements in communication, organization, or technical skills can make a big difference in patient care.

Your Path to Practical Nursing Excellence

By focusing on both clinical and soft skills, licensed practical nurses build strong, lasting careers. These abilities not only improve patient health but also help nurses feel confident and fulfilled in their work. With dedication and ongoing learning, practical nurses can reach excellence in their profession.

Licensed practical nurse skills combine patient care, medical knowledge, and soft skills like communication and compassion. By strengthening LPN skills and abilities, a practical nurse can create a rewarding career while making a positive difference in the lives of patients.

Swedish Massage

If you are looking to help clients relax, alleviate muscle tension, or simply increase circulation, learning Swedish massage therapy is the place to begin. Swedish massage therapy increases feelings of relaxation through gliding, tapping, vibration, friction, and kneading strokes. Swedish massage is the foundation to other popular massage therapy modalities such as Myofascial release therapy and Sports massage therapy.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial therapeutic massage is another massage modality known for its restorative benefits and the relief of muscle tension. Massage therapists use Myofascial release therapy to stretch and work out tense muscle knots in the connective tissue of the body called fascia. In massage therapy courses, budding massage therapists are taught how to locate the tense fascia and make it “release. The process begins when the massage therapist applies pressure and slowly works out the muscle tension. Many massage therapists use stretching devices to help release the fascia and advance the recovery process.

Sports massage

One of the most popular and useful massage therapy techniques, Sports massage, is beneficial for injury-prone clients looking to increase flexibility and accelerate muscle recovery. This therapeutic massage also offers pain relief, anxiety reduction, and the ease of muscle tension. This technique promotes relaxation, improves circulation, relieves pain, and balances the body’s energy pathways, making it a sought-after holistic approach for stress and wellness. Students in massage therapy programs learn to map reflex zones using charts, apply pressure effectively with their hands and fingers, and balance stimulation on both sides of the body for symmetry.

Hot stone massage

Hot stone massage therapy is a relaxing and therapeutic technique often taught in massage therapy programs. This method involves placing smooth, heated basalt stones on specific areas of the body to promote relaxation and relieve tension. The heat penetrates deep into the muscles, making it easier for therapists to manipulate and treat tight or painful areas. Training includes key elements such as proper stone heating, safe handling, precise placement, and client communication to ensure comfort and safety.

If you prefer to be behind-the-scenes support personnel, consider becoming a paralegal or legal assistant. Two of the most common jobs in the legal profession are paralegals and legal assistants; they are known for being a lawyer’s support system and backbone.

Paralegals and legal assistants are vital in the practice of law. You might be wondering are legal assistants and paralegals the same thing; as well as what it is they do. Continue reading to get details on the job duties and education differences between legal assistants and paralegals.

What is the difference between paralegals and legal assistants?

Paralegals and legal assistants differ in terms of responsibilities and education. Paralegals must have field-specific training in paralegal studies by completing either an associate or bachelor’s degree. Legal assistants do not need a formal education because they don’t necessarily touch legal responsibilities like paralegals.

The education of a paralegal grants them more higher-level responsibilities, such as managing a department or paralegal team. Certified paralegals work side by side with attorneys, either independently or semi-independently. While legal assistants are more responsible for clerical and secretarial duties and serve as administrative assistants.

Take the first step in your career journey today!

Paralegals can specialize in law, such as family, criminal, real estate, or immigration. Paralegals can be independent contractors and hired by individuals or law firms to perform paralegal work for cases. Paralegals may perform some administrative duties, but their main job duties are legal tasks.

The new location will offer classes to prospective students toward a Licensed Practical Nursing or Clinical Medical Assistant Certificate with the benefit of being able to further their career close to home. Students will begin the program in Amsterdam and finish up in Albany.

The country is currently facing a national healthcare nursing crisis. The latest data shows that New York is projected to face a shortage of almost 40,000 nurses by 2030. In the Mohawk Valley Region alone, there is an 83.3% general shortage of Licensed Practical Nurses and an 85.7% shortage of Certified Medical Assistants. This is compared to a 26.1% and 37.5% shortage in New York City, respectively. By opening this new extension site, 91ÁÔÆæ is demonstrating its commitment to investing in the next generation of New York State healthcare workers.

“When looking at the Amsterdam area, we recognized the large gap in options for professionals to continue their education in the medical field. This was reinforced after speaking with local medical facilities, including St. Mary’s Healthcare, Nathan Littauer Hospital, and Capstone Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, where they shared there is a vast staffing shortage of trained medical professionals and a need for CNAs, medical assistants, and LPNs within their facilities,â€ said Faith Ann Takes, president, CEO, and owner of 91ÁÔÆæ. “We look forward to helping to bridge this gap with our new extension site and bring more opportunities for jobs and prosperity Amsterdam and its surrounding areas.â€

In an additional effort to help close the gap on healthcare shortages, 91ÁÔÆæ has partnered with the. Through this partnership, 91ÁÔÆæ can offer eligible New York State residents and residents of certain bordering states full coverage of tuition, books, and academic fees while pursuing Practical Nursing and Clinical Medical Assistant Certificates. This program will enable those who want to enter the healthcare field as Nurses or Medical Assistants with the opportunity with little to no financial burden. Their focus can be on their studies and the skills they need to strengthen New York’s healthcare workforce.

“I came to 91ÁÔÆæ to pursue a career in nursing. For many years I was on the fence about going back to school and finally decided to do it. It was the best decision I could have ever made. The professors and the office staff are incredible and understand that many of us students are working and have families. The support is a breath of fresh air; these people will go out of their way to help you succeed. My confidence is growing, and I am truly grateful for everything they have done. By far one of the best decisions I have ever made,â€ said nursing student Jenna Colasanti.

Students participating in the program can earn their certificate in as little as 14 months and can earn NHA certification in phlebotomy, EKG, certified clinical medical assistant, and certified medical administrative assistant. In addition, students can attend to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Hands-on and clinical internships in Amsterdam will also be offered.

Completing a massage therapy education at a massage therapy school could open you up to a number of wonderful career opportunities. If you are considering enrolling in a massage therapy school read on to learn some things you may want to know about this career!

Take the first step in your career journey today!

What is massage therapy?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the body’s muscles and other soft tissues for wellness-related purposes. Massage therapists treat clients using touch to knead the body’s tissues, often to relieve pain, heal injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, etc. Those who love helping others and are passionate about natural living find massage therapy a compassionate and rewarding career.

Massage therapists typically help with:

  • Locating painful or tense areas of the body
  • Manipulating muscles and other soft tissues of the body
  • Providing clients with guidance on stretching, strengthening, overall relaxation, and improving their posture

By talking to their clients, massage therapists can suggest individualized treatment plans or relaxation techniques to practice outside of sessions. Additionally, massage therapists often offer different types of massage, including Swedish massage, deep-tissue massage, and sports massage, depending on the needs and health conditions of the client.

What is massage therapy school like?

Education requirements for massage therapists depend on the state or locality; however, most state licensing agencies require you to have a high school diploma or its equivalent to enroll.

A good massage therapy training program is expected to teach students all these therapeutic techniques and more. These classes help students learn about massage therapy – as both a self-care treatment and a medical therapy that is used to complement other medical practices like chiropractic care.

How long is a massage therapy program?

It varies based on how many hours your state requires for licensing and how long you take to complete the program. Many schools offer a choice of day or evening massage therapy programs, with distinct starting and ending dates. The programs can range from a couple of months to 2 years.

Careers in massage therapy

The many diverse employment options make massage therapy school an attractive option. Apart from owning a private practice, massage therapists can choose from a number of diverse employment opportunities. The most common employers for massage therapists are:

  • Self-employed workers
  • Personal care services
  • Offices of health practitioners
  • Chiropractors
  • Accommodation (hotels, resorts, etc.) (1)

Another great advantage of a career in massage therapy is its flexibility. It’s possible to grow your massage practice while pursuing other jobs or education on the side.

How much does a massage therapist make?

It generally depends on where you work and the type of massage therapy you offer. Some other factors that will contribute to licensed massage therapists’ income are the demand for it in your area, the rate you charge per hour, and if you provide other services or products with your massage therapy services.
